Emerging Influential Blogs

In Janette’s words: “new and emerging blogs that are making an impact to its readers in 2009. These are blogs that… are gradually gaining a considerable amount of readership and influence. They also blog for various reasons such as expression of thoughts, sharing of knowledge and insights, events reporting or coverage, and some for profit.”

Rules

  • Blog about the 10 (not less) most important blogs in your eyes that were launched between May 1st 2008 – May 1st 2009.
  • You can change your picks as often as like; they will only be counted on August 2nd, 2009.
  • The blogs you vote for must have been created after May 1st 2008, not older blogs that changed names or domains.
  • Only one entry per blogger, and you’re only eligible if your blog has an updated profile/about page providing contact information (they’re trying to weed out slogs).
  • Your list post must contain a link back to the announcement post.
  • To submit your entry, leave a comment on the announcement post with your post’s permalink. If you change your list before the deadline but after having submitted your entry, leave another comment to announce the update.

Prizes

10 randomly-chosen group writing project participants will win US$100. To be eligible for the prize – of which I was one of the winners last year – your blog post needs to link to the sponsors listed on the announcement post.

7 Questions With Janette Toral About the 2008 Emerging Influential Blogs Group Writing Project

Janette Toral is the Influential Blogger behind the Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs of 2008 Group Writing Project. With a professionally-designed logo, $1000 in prizes and a real-world awards ceremony, this was one of the few group writing projects in recent memory that could truly be called an event.

Jacob Share 1) What were your goals for the group writing project?
Janette Toral This is an annual writing project that intends to put the spotlight on new blogs as they get cited by blogging peers.
Jacob Share 2) What did you plan on doing to achieve those goals?
Janette Toral This will continue every year and evolve as we gain recognition from bloggers internationally.
Jacob Share 3) Did everything go according to plan?
Janette Toral I was not able to sustain the momentum of getting international participants. I plan to get coordinators for other countries beginning 2009 who shall take charge in attracting entries.
Jacob Share 4) How did you get so many sponsors?
Janette Toral All of them are my club members (http://www.e-commercephilippines.com) whom I’ve built and established relationship through the years.
Jacob Share 5) Did you achieve your goals?
Janette Toral I was hoping to get 200 entries but end up getting 177.
Jacob Share 6) What would you do the same next time and what would you do differently?
Janette Toral Almost all the same. Next year though, I plan to only count those who make a full qualified top 10 list. In addition, cut off date next year will be from May 1, 2008 to the present. Dates are adjusted based on the blog age of the youngest winner of the previous year.
Jacob Share 7) What surprised you the most about how the group writing project played out, in a positive and/or negative way?
Janette Toral In a positive way, I have found the niche for my blog and this is something that I will continue every year. The writing project becomes a source of insight on the direction new blogs are taking. Like this year, group blogs dominate the winners of this writing project. I’m not sure if it is negative, I note that the biggest barrier in joining my writing project is that many of us are not familiar with new blogs that are making great waves out there. We got partly confined with our usual reading list.I hope this writing project will encourage fellow bloggers to check out new blogs as early as now and consider joining next year.

Take away lessons

  1. Promotion – if you want international reach, promote on an international level.
  2. Participation – if you have a certain goal in mind, require participants to follow rules that will only lead you to your goal.
  3. Sponsorship – use your pre-existing business network.

Thanks to Janette Toral for her valuable advice.
